Lot 4532
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.36 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 330. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. Victory standing front, head to left, placing her right foot on prow, holding scepter in her right hand and resting her left on shield; in field to left, star; in exergue, PRT•. A very unusual piece. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This rare 'barbarous' imitation is a mule, combining an obverse for Constantine I with a Constantinopolis reverse. The laureate head is anachronistic since by the time this reverse type was introduced, Constantine had abandoned the laurel wreath in favor of the rosette diadem.
